Despite this technical complexity and confusion, Web3 is causing shifts that in the end will define a new kind of reality. As a result, people continue to flock into the Web3 space to see if there is an opportunity for them as individuals or career-inclined personnel.
In this article, I discussed the causes of this complexity, how it can be avoided, and how to navigate Web3 by categorizing it.
Web3 and Its Complexity.
Not to beat around the bush, the complexity of Web3 cuts across different reasons; here are some of them:
Unfamiliar Technology and New Terms: Unlike Web2, the introduction of Web3 creates a challenge as it introduces new and unfamiliar concepts to the average web user who has long been used to the underlying technology of Web2.
Terms such as decentralization, cryptography, trilemma, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), among others, may seem foreign and complex to understand, thus contributing to the complexity of Web3.
Web3 Underlying Technology: Compared to Web2, where users are used to having data stored in a database, Web3 employs blockchain technology, leading to a decentralized data storage model.
This new concept confuses new users who may wonder where their data is stored and ask a series of questions like where data is stored and other related questions as they navigate the Web3 space.
Web3 Solutions: Web3 offers a variety of solutions, ranging from Defi and NFTs to Gaming and Social Media, each with its unique complexities and interaction with its respective blockchain.
This multitude of options can leave beginners and new users confused about how to navigate each solution individually and with ease.
Web3 Career opportunities: Career opportunities is a major reason for individuals to explore and understand Web3. However, questions of how, where, when, or if individuals can apply their prior knowledge from Web2 space remains unclear or unanswered, leading to confusion among those transitioning to Web3.
What You Need To Know.
- To build a functional web ecosystem, we need three parts:
The backend: The backend is the infrastructure or foundation upon which this system is built.
The frontend: The frontend is the interface through which users interact with the backend.
The database: The database is the storage location for all data generated by users when they interact with the backend.
In the web2 ecosystem, databases reside with a central authority and the backend is built and maintained by the same authority while the application stands as the front end for interaction. This process is called Centralization.
The Web3 ecosystem employs blockchain technology for its backend, which is not owned or controlled by a single centralized authority. However, various nodes comes together with other underlying protocols to form a single blockchain.
Decentralized applications serves as the front end for user interaction, while the data is stored securely on the blockchain. It eliminates the need for a middleman, such as a central authority, that controls data in Web2.
Navigating Without Confusion.
To make navigating Web3 easier, I categorized it into three aspects.
The Technical part: The creation and usage of blockchain technology involve the development of both the blockchain itself and the applications required to interact with it.
To create and utilize a blockchain network, software engineers must write codes known as smart contracts, which define the rules and functionality of the blockchain.
The semi-technical part: Interacting with the various decentralized applications built on the blockchain does not necessarily require coding expertise. However, it requires a certain level of knowledge and understanding of the blockchain network on which these applications are built to use and navigate these solutions effectively.
Examples of such solutions are Decentralized Finance (DeFi) platform, Non Fungible Token (NFT)platforms, and Decentralized Autonomous organization (DAO) platforms.
The not-so-technical part: The Web3 ecosystem also presents career opportunities that do not require coding expertise. However, to fully comprehend this aspect of Web3, it is necessary to understand the fundamentals and terminology of the ecosystem.
Careers such as product management, Web3 marketing, community management, and moderation are examples of non-technical roles in Web3 that requires an understanding of the technology and the ecosystem. These roles are critical in driving the adoption and growth of the various Web3 solutions and platforms.
Now, that you now know these categories, you can now pick a particular aspect you want to venture into. whether as a developer, a semi-technical user that needs expertise to interact and use solutions created on the blockchain, or choosing a not-so-technical career path. nonetheless,web3 provides opportunities for individuals at every category listed above.
